Royals Top Gyrenes With Big Second Half

Box Score LAKE WALES, Fla.- The Royals women's basketball team has won 4 of their last 6 entering the game Saturday against the Ave Maria Gyrenes. The Royals were back home for the first time in three games and did not disappoint the home crowd. The first half did not go the way the Royals had liked as the Gyrenes jumped out on top early with a 19-12 first quarter lead, including a 7-2 run to end the period. The Gyrenes opened the second quarter building up their biggest lead of the game, 25-14, with just seven minutes remaining. The Royals would cut into the lead a bit, but still went into halftime down nine points, 32-23. The Royals came out in the third quarter shooting the basketball as they hit 3 three pointers to cut the Gyrene lead down to four points. The Royals then finished the quarter with a 7-4 run to go into the fourth only down 42-41. The Gyrenes held a seven point lead with 5:55 remaining in the game, but the Royals were not done scoring. Warner would go on a 13-0 run to take over the lead from the Gyrenes and go up 56-50 with 2:18 left. The Royals would hit 4 of 6 free throws late in the game to hold on to their lead and take a victory over Ave Maria, 62-58. With the win, the Royals improve to 12-14 (6-8) on the season. Warner was led by Sara Poehlman with 14 points, I'munique Green with 13 point, and Kaley Schmick with 11 points. The Royals have their final home game of the season Thursday night in a very important Sun Conference game against the Thomas Nighthawks. Game is set for tip off at 5 pm.
