Fourth Quarter Pushes Royals Past Gyrenes

Box Score AVE MARIA, Fla.- The women's basketball team traveled down to Ave Maria to take on the Gyrenes in a big Sun Conference game on Saturday afternoon. The Royals got off to a slow start as they found themselves down 17-4 after the first quarter. However, the Royals would open the second quarter on a 10-3 run and pull themselves back into the game only down seven, 26-19, at halftime. Both the Royals and Gyrenes played a very even third quarter, with Ave Maria getting the slight edge, 11-10, to put the Gyrenes up eight heading into the fourth. That is when the Royals would come alive and make their comeback. The Royals began the fourth on a 10-0 run and would take the lead 39-37 with 6:56 left in the game. With the Royals hanging on to the lead, they would hit their free throws at the end of the game and survive a last second three point attempt by Ave Maria to win, 43-40. With the win, the Royals improve to 11-13 (5-7) on the season. The Royals were led by Kaley Schmick who had 13 points in the game. Next up, Warner will head over to Webber International on Thursday, February 9 to take on the Warriors at 5:30.
