LAKE WALES, Fla. – Warner University football and Edward Waters College football met on the gridiron Saturday afternoon in a game that ended in an overtime thriller. The Edward Waters Tigers bested the Warner Royals with a final score of 33-30 in OT.
The matchup was two very young teams still fighting to establish their respective seasons. For the Royals, it was the first matchup of the Mid-South Conference Sun Division.
Justin Dalton and the Royals struck first as he nailed a 29 yard field goal to give the Royals a 3-0 lead.
The Tigers answered back by Richard Montgomery returning the kickoff for 94 yards and a Tigers touchdown giving the Tigers a 7-3 lead.
Warner regained the lead when
Andre Tommie connected with
Jeffrey Suarez for an 87 yard touchdown. A
Justin Dalton extra point gave the Royals a 10-7 lead.
Edward Waters countered with a 58 yard touchdown pass from Derrick Jones to David Beeks. The Royals special teams stood tall and blocked the extra point attempt holding the Tigers to a 13-10 lead.
Andre Tommie and the Royals again found pay dirt as Tommie linked up with
Theodore Hammonds for an 11 yard touchdown pass giving the Royals a 17-13 lead.
Tigers QB Derrick Jones scampered in for a 1 yard run and a touchdown taking the lead back for the Tigers at 20-17.
Jemerh Cosby and the Royals struck again as Cosby broke loose for a 21 yard run for a touchdown giving the Royals a 24-20 lead.
Justin Dalton would again come through huge for the Royals as he nailed a 25 yard field goal extending the Royals lead to 7, 27-20.
Nearing the end of the 4
th quarter, Derrick Jones found the end zone again on a 6 yard run tying the game and sending it to the end of regulation at a 27-27 tie.
After the Tigers held the Royals offense,
Justin Dalton booted a 39 yard field goal to give the Royals a 30-27 lead in overtime.
Unable to stop the Tigers, Derrick Jones scored on a 1 yard run to seal the deal and give the Tigers the overtime win 33-30.
This was the first overtime game for the Royals this season as they drop to 0-5 on the year with a 0-1 MSC-Sun Division record.
Jemerh Cosby rumbled to the tune of 14 carries for 81 yards and a touchdown.
Andre Tommie completed 11-15 passes, throwing for 210 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Jeffrey Suarez stole the show as he added 3 receptions for 113 yards and a touchdown that was an 87 yard connection from Tommie. Defensively,
Emmanuel Bien-Aime led the way with 9 tackles with 7 unassisted. The Royals defense also blocked an extra point attempt for their first of the season.
Warner sets their sights on next weekend's matchup as they have another tough MSC Sun Division game against the Southeastern Fire. Kickoff is scheduled for October 13
th at 1:30 p.m. and the location will be at Lakeland Christian High School.
