No. 24 Lady Royals Softball Defeats NAIA No. 1 Grizzlies In NAIA Leadoff Classic Weekend Tournament

LAKE WALES, Fla. – A huge week for the Royals finds them 15-6 overall. The Royals delivered the NAIA No. 1 Georgia Gwinnett Grizzles (18-1) their first loss of the year.  The Royals also split a double header against NCAA D-II Southwest Minnesota State University. Sara Bruno named to All-Tournament Team.

GAME 1 WU 11, SMSU 6

The game picked up in the top of the 2nd inning when the Mustangs put up the first run of the game with a homerun with the inning ending with the score being 1-0. In the bottom of the 2nd, Madison Taylor started the girls off with a single to left field. Megan Hammett reached by a single to right field moving Taylor to second. Kasey Heslin singled loading the bases for the Lady Royals. Chantal Crockett singled scoring 2 of the runners. Heslin reached third on the at bat and Crockett legged out a double on the throw.  The score at the end of the inning was 2-1. The Lady Mustangs tacked on another run in the top of the 3rd moving the score up to 2-2. Warner tacked on 3 more runs in the bottom of the 3rdBrittany Winget started things off when she reached on by an error by the center fielder. Taylor was able to single through the right side moving Winget to second. Hammett sent a shot to center where an error was made that allowed Winget and Taylor to score and Hammett to reach third. Heslin reached by an error from the pitcher that also allowed Hammett to score. The score reached 5-2 by the end of the inning. The Mustangs came back in the top of the 5th tying the score back 5-5 due to a few errors made by the Lady Royals.  In the bottom of the 5th Warner answered back with more runs. Avery Cotterill reached on by an error from the Mustang's third baseman. Taylor reached by a fielder's choice with Cotterill being out at second. Hammett singled up the middle that allowed Taylor to advance to third. Cortney Bunker singled that allowed Taylor to score and advanced Hammett to second. Crockett singled up the middle scoring Hammett and moving Bunker to second. Sara Bruno singled up the middle as well, scoring Bunker and advancing Crockett to second. The inning ended with the score being moved up to 8-5. Warner tacked on their last runs in the bottom of the 6th. Winget singled through the right side to start things off. Cotterill sac bunted to the pitcher moving Winget to second. Winget then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Taylor singled up the middle scoring Winget. Taylor also advanced on a wild pitch. Hammett then doubled to left center scoring Taylor, where she then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Bunker added the last run when she singled to left field scoring Hammett. The game ended with a score of 11-6 for the Lady Royals.

Sylvia Welsh threw for 5.2 innings allowing for 5 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk and 2 strike outs. Brooke Olinger finished the game throwing 1.1 innings with 4 hits, 3 runs, and 1 walk.

GAME 2 WU 5, SMSU 8

The second game for the Lady Royals was a close one. The Mustangs attacked early moving the score up to 3-0 in the top of the 1st.  The Lady Royals answered back in the bottom of the 2nd with 2 runs of their own. Brittany Winget walked. Megan Hammett sent a shot to left field for a home run. The inning ended with a score of 3-2. In the bottom of the 3rd Warner tied the game up. Chantal Crockett singled to left field. Sara Bruno then singled through the right side advancing Crockett to second. Crockett stole third and S. Bruno advanced to second on the throw. Kayla Bruno grounded out to their short stop, but it allowed Crockett to score moving the score up to 3-3. In the top of the 5th the Mustangs answered back with 4 runs of their own moving the score up to 7-3. In the bottom of the 5th, S. Bruno singled up the middle with Mackenzye Bobb coming in to pinch run. K. Bruno then doubled to right field advancing Bobb to third. Avery Cotterill sac flied to left field scoring Bobb and moving K. Bruno to third. Brittany Winget singled scoring K. Bruno with the inning ending 7-5. The Lady Mustangs ended the game with 1 more run with the score being 8-5, the Lady Royals falling to Minnesota after a hard-fought game.
Jordan Lewis pitched for 5 innings where she allowed 6 hits, 5 runs, 2 walks and 3 strike outs. Paris Cook pitched an inning allowing 4 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk, and 1 strikeout. Brooke Olinger finished the last inning with 1 hit and 1 strikeout.

WU 7, GGC 3

Warner University faced their #1 nationally ranked tournament opponents Georgia Gwinnett for their 3rd game of the NFCA tournament. Warner struck first in the top of the 1st. Courtney Bunker walked to start of the inning. Avery Cotterill sac bunted to move Bunker to second. Sara Bruno drew a walk as well for her at bat. Unfortunately Bunker was caught stealing 3rd on a dropped ball by the catcher. S. Bruno advanced to second on the throw. Kayla Bruno tripled to deep left center scoring S. Bruno making the score 1-0. Gwinnett answered back with  a run of their own in the top of the 2nd.  In the bottom of the 2nd, the Lady Royals had an answer of their own. Brianna Barrios started things off with a single up the middle. Brittany Winget then walked allowing Barrios to move to second. Kasey Heslin singled in the infield allowing Barrios and Winget to advance in bases. Bunker then singled scoring Barrios and moving Winget to third and Heslin to second. Avery Cotterill then hit a sacrifice fly that scored Winget and moved Heslin to third and Bunker to second. S. Bruno then hit a home run scoring Heslin and Bunker. The inning ended with the score moving to 6-1. Warner added another run in the bottom of the 4th. Bunker walked again for her at bat. During an at bat Bunker stole second. K. Bruno singled to right center allowing Bunker to score for the only run of the inning moving the score to 7-1. Gwinnett could only put up 2 runs during the top of the 7th, where the game ended with a score of 7-3.

Sylvia Welsh pitched for 7 innings allowing 9 hits, 3 runs, 4 walks, and 6 strike outs.

WU 7, CAMP 8

Campbellsville struck first in the bottom of the 1st with a run scoring marking the game 1-0 against the Lady Royals. In the bottom of the 3rd, the Lady Tigers came out firing running the score up to 8-0 against Warner. In the top of the 4th, Kayla Bruno started things off with a single to left field. Briana Barrios then reached on an error by the third baseman and allowed K. Bruno to move to second. Avery Cotterill grounded out to 3rd base and it allowed the runners to advance. Brittany Winget hit a shot to the second baseman which caused an error that allowed K. Bruno to score, Barrios to advance to third and Winget to be safe at first. Megan Hammett singled to left field scoring Barrios from third moving the score up to 8-2. Warner added on more runs in the top of the 5th. Cortney Bunker started things off by doubling to left field. Chantal Crockett then singled to center field moving Bunker and advancing to second on the throw. Sara Bruno came up with a big hit, sending a home run to left field moving the score to 8-5. It wasn't until top of the 6th the last few runs came in for the Lady Royals. Hammett singled to left field to start things off. Kasey Heslin reached on an error by the third baseman and it allowed Hammett to reach second. Crockett then singled to right field scoring Hammett and moving Heslin to third. During the next at bat Crockett stole second. S. Bruno grounded out to second, but it allowed Heslin to score. The inning ended with a score of 8-7. The Lady Royals fell to Campbellsville by the end of the game with a score of 8-7.
Jordan Lewis pitched for 2.2 innings allowing 3 hits, 7 runs, 2 walks, and 1 strike out. Brooke Olinger threw for 3.1 innings allowing 3 hits, 1 run, and 1 walk.
