WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Warner University Royals Softball improves to 3-1 on the season falling to Mount Mercy then walking off against Bryan College.
GAME 1 - WU 1, MMU 3
Both teams were able to put up 7-hits apiece but it was Mount Mercy that was able to push the runs across. The Royals fell to the Mustangs by a final score of 3-1.
The Mustangs struck first blood as Keick shot a single up the middle that scored both Robertson and Braughton.
The Royals plated their lone run in the top of the 6
thwhen
Caitlyn Yockey singled down the right field line scoring
Ashton Owen but then was thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double.
Mount Mercy sealed the game when Shield doubled deep to left center and platted Heick giving the Mustangs the 3-1 eventual final.
Tatiana Rodriguez threw 6 innings giving up 7 hits and 3 runs with only 1 earned. She also struck out 3 only walking 1.
GAME 2 – WU 2, BC 1
The Royals walked off in the second consecutive night in the bottom of the 7
th just this time against the Lions of Bryan College.
There was not much going on as both pitchers were throwing gems into the 7
thinning. For the Lions, West entered the bottom the 7
thonly surrendering two hits to the Royals.
Brooke Olinger carried a 6 innings pitched only surrendering one hit.
The Lions Huling, reached on an error at first base then advanced to second base after another throwing error cause Bryan to score and take a 1-0 lead in the top of the 7
th.
Faced with adversity and 2 outs in the bottom of the 7
th,
Breyona Shell came in big with a stand up double down the left field line.
Katelyn Richards took over the running duties for Shell at second.
Ashton Owen received a pinch hit chance for
Megan Garfinkel and did so by smacking a single back up the middle giving the Royals the tying run at 2-1.
Megan Garfinkel re-entered to run for Owen.
Kasey Heslin punched a base hit through the left side of the field that was then run over by the left fielder and cause the winning run to score!
FINAL THOUGHTS
The Royals split the day but have started the season 3-1. They face another NAIA top opponent in the #5 Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies tomorrow followed by Martin Methodist College.
