The Warner Royals came into the day with a 22-8 record, are (RV) in the NAIA and are also the #1 team in the nation for the NCCAA.
Game 1
Joey Theune pitched like a major leaguer on the mound today for the Royals, showing excitement, remaining calm and above all keeping his composure throughout the entire game.
Theune got into some trouble a couple of times throughout the game, even giving up 1 run in the 5
th and 7
th innings but remained level headed and threw the ball lights out, earning his 1
st win of the season (1-1) after throwing a complete game (CG), striking out 10 while only giving up 2 runs on 5 hits to the V-Hawks.
Warner garnered 10 hits as a team, going 10-32 as a team at the plate in the 1
st game.
Ronny Penalo lead the team with 2 RBI's in the game and
Xanders Vazquez scored 2 runs, 1 earned 1 unearned.
The Royals trailed 2-1 as they entered the bottom 7
th inning but that all changed when
Ronny Penalo singled on a ball to the left side of the infield, the ball managed to elude the V-Hawk 1
st baseman, getting all the way down the right field line, allowing
Xanders Vazquez and
Scott Fickas to score.
Warner added 1 more in the bottom of the 8
th off a SAC fly from
Erich Jaquez that allowed
Alfred Brown to score the 5
th run of the game for the Royals.
Game 2
Andrew Yarbrough started on the mound for the Royals but did not have a stellar outing, as did none of the Royals pitchers that threw in game 2 of today's double header as the Royals fell 12-6 to the Blue Devils.
Trey Matthews started behind the plate tonight for the Royals but went down with an apparent thumb injury early in the game; Matthews injured his thumb attempting to throw out a base runner who was attempting to steal 3
rd base.
The Blue Devils controlled most of the game smashing 15 hits, as the Royals seems physically and mentally exhausted after playing 9 games in 6 days in the Florida heat, this past Sunday being the only day the Royals have had off since last Thursday and dating back to last Week, have played 13 games in 7 days with only 2 days off.
The Royals started to mount a comeback in the later innings, scoring 4 runs over the span of the 6
th, 7
th, and 8
th innings, bringing the deficit to within 6 but could not get over the hump as the Blue Devils starting pitcher Matt Blunk, (3-1), kept Royals batters guessing all night.
Warner will have 2 days off to re-gather, regroup and prepare for their 3
rd conference series this weekend as they travel north to take on the USCB Sand Sharks.
