BABSON PARK, Fla. – This afternoon the Warner Royals took game 2 of a crucial double-header vs. their Sun Conference and Crooked Lake rival the Webber International Warriors.
Game 2 was won 5-0 behind an excellent pitching performance from
Andres Fernandez, who pitched a complete game 1 hit shutout on the road, striking out 5 batters on his way to his 8
th victory of the year, (8-5).
Fernandez only allowed 4 base runners the entire game, allowing 1 hit, walking 2, and hitting 1. His performance against the Warriors is his 3
rd complete game of the season, will drop his ERA down below a 3.5 and will increase his strikeouts to 76 this season.
Game 1 – WU 1 – WIU 8
The Royals put up 5 hits in game 1 of the double-header and were able to get a run on the board in the top of the 3
rd inning after
Xanders Vazquez reached safely on an error and later scored on a
Ronny Penalo single up the middle.
Webber put up 5 runs in the bottom of the 6
th inning and capped the day off with 2 more in the 8
th to seal the game 1 victory for the Warriors 8-1.
Game 2 – WU 5 – WIU 0
Warner jumped out to an early lead, scoring 1 in the top of the 2
nd and 3
rd innings, and never looked back.
The Royals scored 5 runs on 11 hits, with
Xanders Vazquez,
Rio Russell,
Ronny Penalo, and
Alex Vazquez all notching multiple hits.
Andres Fernandez earned the Player of the Day for the Royals this afternoon with his spectacular performance on the mound in game 2 of the double-header. He faced 32 batters, recorded 15 fly outs, 7 ground outs, and 5 strikeouts.
Fernandez will be a big asset for Warner if they can clinch a spot in the TSC playoffs.
The Royals need to take game 3 of the TSC series this Tuesday, time still TBD, in order to feel secure about the TSC playoffs.
Michael Batten is a probable starter for the Royals in the decisive game 3.
