LAKE WALES, Fla. – Warner started off the season with an NAIA Top-10 opponent in Eastern Oregon. The Royals and the Mountaineers met for the first time in the two school's volleyball history.
The Royals were led by sophomore
Alyssa Muench on the attacking front and she tied Megan Bunn (EOU) with a match high 12 kills. Muench who saw limited playing time as a freshman last season, has taken charge and put up some veteran numbers against a tough team.
Bailee Mack added a career best 26 assists in the match while adding a kill and 8 digs. Royals freshman standout
Grace Bergeron had a phenomenal match serving as the libero and tallying 34 digs and also registering an ace off the serve.
It was a loss for the Royals dropping the match 1-3 to the Mountaineers. But not a bad game considering they handed the NAIA No. 10 their first set loss of the season. Royals head coach
Chrissy Moskovits said, "I'm absolutely thrilled with our performance tonight. For the most part, each player executed the game plan. We had some really intense moments today. Now it's about sustaining that energy for a full match."
Warner fell in the opening Set 14-25. They put it together in Set 2 as they battled to a 25-21 win. With a strong ending effort, the Mountaineers edged out Set 3 defeating the Royals 25-23. The Royals dropped Set 4 11-25 to finish off the match.
The Mountaineers defeated Webber International earlier today in a straight three set sweep improving them now to 2-0 to start the season. Not only do the Mountaineers hold an NAIA Top-10 ranking, but they're in search of their sixth straight NAIA National Championship Tournament appearance.
The Royals travel to the College of Coastal Georgia next week for a 3-game match against Middle Georgia State University, West Virginia University Institute of Technology, and St. Andrews University as a part of the Coastal Georgia Mariners Invitational.
