Warner Football – Royals Rewrite History With 56 Second Half Points Taking Down Knights In First Season Victory

GRAYSON, Ky. – The Royals found pay dirt in Grayson, Ky., after trailing 7-21 at halftime, Warner blasted the Knights with a scoring barrage of 56 points in the second half to bring home their first victory of the season 63-35.

The final score of 63 points, is the most points ever scored in a single game for the Royals. The record was previously set at a 48-45 Royals victory over Kentucky Wesleyan in 2014. The Royals broke the previous record in the second half alone, but with the overall score of 63, Warner rewrote the history books to the tune of a 15-point difference.

Like many teams, the Royals struggled in their season opener. Warner then went on to play two playoff contending teams ranked inside of the NAIA Top-16. Kentucky Christian was receiving votes to be in the national top 25 and recently dropped out of the race after falling to Pikeville. The Royals have without a doubt been tested with a very difficult schedule thus far, however, the production has been present even against the nationally top ranked teams.

The Royals had a slow start to the game looking to head into halftime trailing 0-21. Dylan Blair hooked up with Theodore Hammonds on a 20-yard pass into the endzone for a touchdown. A converted attempt by Santiago Tovar gave the Royals seven as they marched into half looking for any kind of offense.

The Halftime pep talk must have been a good one because the Royals who received the kick to start the second half came back for one of the most explosive second halves in all of college football this year.

The Knights held the Royals on their opening drive of the second half then drove 6-plays for 78-yards to take a 28-7 lead over the Royals.

Warner accepted the challenge and went on an unanswered 21-0 scoring spree evening out the game at 28-28 with just 7:00 minutes in possession time. Linsome TJ Boyd scampered in the enzone on a 1-yard rush, Dylan Blair capped off a 6-play 36-yard drive with a 1-yard rushing touchdown. Jeffery Jennings III got the connection from Dylan Blair in the air that went 95-yards for a touchdown.

At the start of the 4th quarter with the game tied at 28-28, the Knights connected on an 8-yard pass to regain the lead 35-28.

The Royals then went on to score 35 unanswered points in the 4th quarter alone to take home the 28 point victory. Jeffery Jennings III capped off a massive offensive day as he broke loose on a 58-yard rush. Dylan Blair again found pay dirt on a 1-yard rush. Darryl Weaver came up with a big stop for the Royals defense turning in a 26-yard pick 6. With 4:10 left in the 4th, Buddy Edwards crossed the goaline on a 3-yard ground pound attack capping off a 6-play 28-yard drive.

Santiago Tovar knocked through all 9 of his extra point attempts.

The Royals receive a bye week next week and will resume their 2019 campaign against yet another nationally ranked opponent and the start of their Mid-South Sun Division schedule No. 24 Keiser University.
