Warner Baseball - Royals Pull Biggest Upset in the Country With Doubleheader Split Against #1 Southeastern

LAKE WALES, Fla. - Warner baseball opened up their 2021 Sun Conference three game series falling to #1 Southeastern 1-2. With the walk off victory, the Royals also snapped a 12 game losing streak to the Polk County foe.

Though the Royals dropped the series, they were able to do what no team has done in nearly forty games.

The Fire opened up the first game with 2 runs in the top of the first inning. The Royals answered quickly with an RBI single by David Torres followed by a John Pichman three run homerun deep to left field. The Royals used another four run onslaught in the bottom of the second to jump out to an 8-2 lead. Tyler Brown had an RBI single, David Torres aided with an RBI single up the middle. All of that was polished off with another big hit from John Pichman which was a double to right center for two RBI's.

The Fire stumped the Royals offense for the remainder of the game and used three homeruns of their own including the solo eventual game winner. The Fire overcame a 8-2 deficit to defeat the Royals 8-9.

John Pichman finished the game 3-5 with 5 RBI's. David Torres was 2-4 with 2 RBI's and 2 runs scored. Taylor Briggs was 1-3 with 2 runs scored and 2 walks.

In game two the Royals jumped out to a 3-0 lead following the bottom of the third with a Tyler Brown single and a David Torres double to right center. The Fire went on to score five unanswered runs through the top of the sixth to lead the Royals 5-3.

The Royals tacked on a run in the bottom of the seventh on a ground ball RBI. The bottom of the ninth showed a strong Royals offense that capitalized on a moment of weakness from the Fire. A bunt by Josh Strickland that was intended to move the runners into scoring position was fielded by the Fire and then an error allowed the Zacary Balogh to advance and score the game tying run. John Pichman came in and achieved the unthinkable as he waited back and drove a ball to right field that scored Taylor Briggs

The game winning walk off hit by Pichman ended a 39 game winning streak by the Fire dating back to last season. More impressively, Pichman came in to pitch in the top of the ninth throwing 1 inning and only surrendering 1 hit earning the win. John Bean started the game for the Royals throwing a great outing including 5 strikeouts and only surrendering 7 hits. Two more pitchers threw in relief. Luke Myers threw 1 inning and stuck out 1 hitter giving up no hits. Andy Yarbrough threw 1.2 innings also holding the Fire to no hits and striking out 2.

With the win, the Royals also snapped another streak. Warner was on a 12 game slide to the Fire dating back to 2017.
