Warner Softball Picks Up Another Win And Drop A Game To The Mustangs

LAKE WALES, FL- The Royals faced off against Mount Mercy University in double-header action on Wednesday afternoon.

In game one, the Royals sent out pitcher Madalyn Morton in hopes of taking game one of the double-header. Morton would be a force to be reckoned with on the mound, keeping the visiting Mustangs off the board through the first four innings. On the offensive side, the Royals got the scoring started in the bottom of the second to take an early lead. The inning was led off by a walk issued to Grace Derstine. Derstine would soon come around to score thanks to a SAC fly from Andrea Rebello. The Royals wouldn't wait long to strike again, as they would deliver several blows in the bottom of the third. After the first three batters got on base, RBI singles from Alyson Becker, Samantha Berube and Grace Derstine  increased the Warner lead to four. The inning wasn't over there, however, as Andrea Rebello connected for SAC fly making the game 5-0. Mount Mercy started to find their timing on offense, as they would score three in the top of the 5th thanks to a three-run homerun from Calli Janik. Both offenses stayed off of the scoreboard the rest of the game, giving the Royals a 5-3 win in game one. Other than a rocky fifth inning, Morton cruised through this one going all seven innings.  On the day, she finished with five strikeouts, seven hits, and three runs given up. The third inning proved to be the difference maker in the game as that was all Warner needed to secure the win. Looking at the lineup, Samantha Berube was a key offensive piece for the Royals, going 2-3 with two singles and an RBI.

Kicking off game two of the double-header, the Royals gave the starting pitching nod to Tyler Mooring in hopes of sweeping the series. Things would not start off great for the Royals as they would quickly fall behind 2-0 in the opening frame. The Mustangs would continue to score in the second and third, taking an early 4-0 lead. After falling behind by four, the Royals would send Morton back out who was very dominant. Morton wouldn't let up a run the rest of the game and kept the game in arms reach for their offense. Despite tallying five hits in the game, Warner would not be able to plate a run, leading to series tying win for the Mustangs 4-0. Alyssa McElvain was phenomenal for Mount Mercy, throwing a complete game with two strikeouts. On the day, the Royals split the series, and head into conference play with a record of 12-14. The Royals will look for their offense to step up in the next series when they host Flordia Memorial at Daly Field. This series will begin Friday March 15th at 4:00 pm.
