LAKE WALES, Fla. - The 2014-15 Warner University women's basketball season got off to a great start on Tuesday night, Oct. 28, as the Lady Royals defeated Florida College 73-46. The Lady Royals (1-0) got a double-double from
Marie Fleurival and held the Falcons (0-2) to 28% shooting from the field in the Warner coaching debut for head coach
John Dunlap.
Fleurival scored Warner's first basket 18 seconds into the game and the Lady Royals were off and running leading 10-3 after six minutes of action. The Falcons hung around and took their first lead of the game at the 7:07 mark but it did not last long. On the Lady Royals' next possession
I'munique Green drained a three pointer and Warner retook the lead for good 20-18.
Warner carried a 37-20 advantage into the break. At the half,
Marie Fleurival led all players with 10 points and had seven rebounds.
Montana Bass was 3-of-8 from behind the arc in the first half and had nine points. Defensively the Lady Royals forced 15 Falcons turnovers in the first half leading to 15 points.
The Lady Royals poured it on in the second half leading by as many as 31 points with 8:15 left in regulation. Fleurival continued to dominate under the basket scoring eight points in the second half.
Leilani Tuani-Fifita also did well around the rim scoring seven points in the period.
In the end the Lady Royals were too much for the visiting Falcons winning handedly 73-46.
After averaging a double-double last season, Fleurival returned to form against the Falcons scoring 18 points and hauling down 10 rebounds in 21 minutes of action. Newcomer
Baylie Bridges scored 13 points in her Warner debut going 5-of-10 from the field.
Montana Bass finished 4-of-11 from behind the arc and had 12 points in the victory.
I'munique Green came off the bench and scored 11 points in 11 minutes of action as well.
The Lady Royals' defense was aggressive all night forcing 25 Falcons turnovers. Fleurival along with
Mariah Williams and
Nirva Lamy all had three steals in the game. Fleurival also blocked four shots.
The Lady Royals return to the court on Saturday, Nov. 1, with their first road game of the season against NCAA-II Florida Tech. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. in Melbourne, Fla.
