ResultsST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – It was an impressive debut for the Warner University men's golf team as they opened their 2015-16 season on Monday and Tuesday. The Royals finished fifth at the 3
rd Annual College of Coastal Georgia Invitational held at Sea Island Golf Club's Retreat Course. In a field of 19 collegiate teams including six currently ranked in the top 17 in the country, the Royals shot a 913 (307-306-300) to open the year.
Ahead of the Royals in the standings were NAIA No. 4 Johnson & Wales University (881), No. 12 Keiser University (883), No. 1 and defending National Champion College of Coastal Georgia (897) and No. 5 University of South Carolina Beaufort (897).
The Royals, who are receiving votes in the NAIA Men's Golf Coaches' Preseason Top 25 poll, finished just ahead of No. 17 Thomas University (914) and No. 16 University of Mobile (914).
Keiser's Louis Hirst was the top individual medalist by one stroke turning in a three-round 214 (72-73-69).Â
Warner University was led by
Jake Levens who finished in a tie for seventh place. Levens fired a three-round 221 (75-74-72) tying him with South Carolina Beaufort's Seth Rockwell.
Jacob Fleck was six shots back with a 227 (76-78-73). Royals newcomer Edvin Lindgren was third on the team in scoring with a 232 (80-76-76).
Collin Johnson was two shots behind Lindgren with a 234 (77-78-79).Â
Gabriel Bell carded a 245 (79-81-85) to round out the Warner team scores.
Kyle Safreed also competed in the highly competitive field and turned in a 248 (86-77-85).
The Royals return to the course on Sept. 27-29 at the Thomas University Fall Invitational. Tournament action will take place at the Kinderlou Forest Golf Course in Valdosta, Ga.
