Warner University Sports Hall of Fame
Carol “Bucko” Simmons was a three-sport student-athlete at Warner from 1980-1984. She was one of the first women in school history to letter in three sports for all four years of her Warner career competing in basketball, softball and volleyball.
Simmons experienced her greatest success on the basketball court where she was named Most Valuable Player for three straight years as a sophomore, junior and senior. In all four years, she was the team’s leading scorer and rebounder.
In 1984, Simmons set a new NCCAA record for the most rebounds in a game with 35. Also in 1984, she scored a career-high 39 points in a game, which was also a school record.
In her basketball career, Simmons scored 1,374 points and had 1,080 rebounds.
Simmons also excelled on the softball field, where she posted the highest batting average on the team in 1984 at .550.
While playing for the Lady Royals volleyball team under the direction of Rosie Carr and Debbie Knuth, Simmons was named a Volleyball Outstanding Tournament Player at the National Small College Athletic Association (NSCAA) tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn., in November 1983. The Lady Royals finished fourth in the tournament that year.
In 1985, her final year as a student, Simmons served as the Intramural Sports Director and established the school’s first women’s flag football league.
Since graduating in 1987 from WSC with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration, Simmons still plays club volleyball and is coaching at the junior high level. She has one son, Joshua Michael.
